Music Video - Initial Ideas:
‘Worshiping’ a girl is the main concept of all of our ideas. When we first chose the song, I found its title very prominent and significant due to the connotation's of worship and praise the arose from the word 'religion'; similarly, in the deconstruction phase I noticed that the main bridge in the chorus states that this unnamed girl is his 'new religion'. The connotations of religion include worshipping, therefore I believe that it would be a lucrative idea to use this concept in our music video. I interpreted the song as being representative of the universal theme of 'young love', which could easily relate to our primarily young audience and therefore decided that the concept of our music video should inhibit the notion of the euphoria of first love and worshipping all the things that someone loves about the person they are infatuated with.
- I have created a mood board for the two most popular concepts, as voted for by our focus group.
Idea 1:
Establishing shots of a city at night, he walks aimlessly down a street in slow motion with streetlights blaring, as he passes he sees a variety of shots of people having fun and enjoying themselves in slow motion. Everyone is in black and white, dark-mise-en-scene everything has a muted colour grade. Then he sees a girl in the street and she's wearing a bright colour. As soon as he sees her everything speeds up. Then he ends up in bed the next morning not remembering anything, he gets up for his repetitive day and finds a polaroid of the night before in his pocket with instructions and he follows them. Notification from boss appears on his phone and he ignores it and leaves the phone behind before going on his journey.
This moodpboard emphasises the rebelliousness of youth, a theme that would resonate with the target audience for indie bands. It emphasises the dark colour palette and grading that will be utilised throughout the video, which is juxtaposed by the single recurring bright yellow, that symbolises 'the hope' and 'new religion' surrounding the mysterious female protagonist. The motif of the colour yellow would be utilised throughout the music video and ancillary tasks. I also particularly like the idea of using a polaroid, as the action of taking and keeping polaroids is a vintage trend that is highly prominent in today's society.

Photographer waking up unenthusiastically ready for a photo-shoot that he doesn't want to do, we see three shots of him in quick succession of him waking up each day and walking to work as his life repeats itself in a constant loop. Shot of him waking up repeated 3 times on the line about repetition, 3 shots of him walking the same way in different clothes. Ends up getting there and sees the girl he has to take photos of, she leaves she's placed a Polaroid in his jacket pocket with instructions on the bottom of the photo and he follows until he ends up in a final destination - treasure hunt like video.
Idea 3:
Boy sees a girl on a shopping channel on multiple TV screens in a window of an old TV shop, he then goes to follow her. Consumerism is addictive and causes him to worship it.
Idea 4:
Montage style videos of clips of a boyfriend and girlfriend together using a vintage colour grade to infer this occurred in the past. At the end of the video, we see the 'montage' fade into a pair of eyes with a close-up shot of a tear falling as he looks down at his screen and a text flashes up reading "We're over.". Or, the montage fades, to reveal that it was being played on a TV screen, surrounded by photos of the girl in the form of a shrine. The final shot is an over the shoulder shot of the man looking at the shrine. This ambiguous ending allows the viewer to assume it's significance. However, one could interpret that he treated her like a religion and therefore was content on highlighting her perfection and power of him by dedicating a shrine to her.
Idea 5:
A girl has a vial of a solution entitled ‘The Worshipper’, close-up shot of bottle with girls eyes behind it beadily looking at it. She gets herself dolled up and ready to go on a date, she goes on date and puts a bit of the vial in the guys drink, he drinks it and worships her following her almost like a dog. She walks down the street with him watching behind following her, she looks at the vial in her hand smiling, before he pushes her in his hyper loved-up state and it accidentally smashes on the floor. The solution turns into a gas like solution going out into the atmosphere, suddenly all these guys begin to follow her as they are all infected by the solution. Switches to a shot of her dancing in the kitchen with one of them, another shot of her sat down, a guy paints her nails whilst another shines her shoes. Role-reversal dominant woman.
This mood board emphasises the motif of the colours red and pink that would be utilised throughout the music video and ancillary tasks. Red is a highly sensual and passionate, it is also highly striking and would most likely be worn by the female protagonist, in order for her to attain the attention of the viewer in each shot; as I believe it is important to centralise the video on the woman who is defying stereotypes by being in constant control, thus highlighting the gender reversal. However, in order to prevent the colour red sexualising the female, we would not include any voyeuristic Laura Mulvey 'male gaze' shots, as our music video is attempting to defy these concepts of women.
