After assembling the first edit of our flashback montage scene, I received feedback from our focus group and teacher stating that the montage appeared too two-dimensional without colour grading and they found it highly difficult to distinguish between the scenes in the present and the past.
DRAFT 1 - Assembled Offline Edit:
RMA Convention Research - Video Camera 4:3 Effect:
From my RMA research, I have undertaken, one of the main conventions of indie music videos is the use of overlaid video camera film grains, scratches and a 4:3 resolution in order to make distinctive sections of the music video appear handheld and rebellious; themes which resonate with the indie mantra. Hailee Steinfeld's 'Let Me Go' music video is a primary example of 4:3 resolution in an RMA, which has heavily influenced the online edit of the flashback scene.
It is notable that, the colour grading used on the footage has a very retro aesthetic and the colours have been desaturated in order to create an effect of an old 8mm 'camcorder' footage. A red light leak has been overlaid onto the footage, which simultaneously acts as a transition between two of the shots. A small amount of noise has been applied to the footage in online-editing to increase the 'vintage' appearance.
'Let Me Go' - Hailee Steinfield:
I then decided to create a draft of our assembled edit, whereby, I would recreate some of the features exhibited in the above RMA which would then be subject to feedback by our focus group.
DRAFT 2 - Edit Including 4:3 Resolution and Noise:
We received the following feedback on the second draft of the flashback scene:
DRAFT 3 - Edit Including 4:3 Resolution and Overlaid Scratches:
We asked members of our focus group for feedback on our third draft of the music video and this is what they had to say:
Taking all of the feedback into account, we created our final draft which members of our focus group depicted to be "Excellent" and "exactly what you would find in an indie music video".
Final Edit:
